IPEVO USB Skype Phone

Skype provides a cheap means for calling anyone, anywhere in the world. Skype-to-Skype calls are free and Skype to normal telephones and mobiles (called Skype_out) costs from only $0.017 euros a minute. The service works on very little bandwidth and has much better quality than MSN Messenger, for example.

There has been a slew of Skype devices released recently to support the service like the IPEVO Free-1 Skype Phone. Using it was as simple as installing the drivers and software that came with the CD, and plugging the phone into the laptop’s USB. The Free-1 phone uses power from the USB, is light-weight (0.65lb) and has many traditional phone functions, like user-selectable ringtones.

I tried making calls yesterday over a wireless GPRS connection (approx. 50kbps) and was pleasantly surprised by the excellent call quality, lack of echo and minimum voice lag. The IPEVO Free-1 Skype phone can be purchased online for $34.99.

There are also cordless DECT Skype phones available in the market (e.g. Linksys CIT-200) but they also costs about 2 times more than the USB counterparts.
